James Edward Smith, 92, of Dover, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at home.
Born July 4, 1917 in Glen Ridge, NJ to Peter E. and Delia O'Reilley-Smith, immigrants from County Caven, Ireland, he was employed at the Douglas Hotel (Newark), Kearney shipyards, served during WWII (U.S. Army), worked for Krueger's Distributors (Essex county) and retired from Greystone State Park as an electrician. He was a member of the Peter J. Smith Cultural Association, John F. Cryan Association, Giblin Association, Frank McGovern Association, Ruane Association, the Irish American Association of Northwest Jersey, Dover Moose Lodge, and the Dover American Legion.
He is survived by one sister, Honora Carney of S. Windsor, CT and two brothers, Peter J. Smith of Edison, and Eugene F. Smith of Jackson and one brother-in-law, Harold O'Connor of Jackson . James is pre-deceased by his wife of 45 years, Faith Elizabeth (Nixon) Smith, his brother Phillip Smith, sisters Kathleen Green, Anne Regan, Peggy Ferruggia, and Lorraine O'Connor.
James will be missed by his children James Bryan Smith and wife Gale Newton of Morris Plains and grandchildren James Bryan Jr. and Elizabeth Smith; Gail Ann Bruno of Dover and grandchildren Casey and James Joseph Bruno; Donna Lee Todd and husband Brian of Ogdensburg and grandchildren Brian and Danielle Todd; and Peter Harold Smith and Donna Esposito of Stanhope and grandchildren Megan and Bailey Smith and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10 West, Randolph (www.tuttlefh.com) Friday, September 11, 2009 3-5PM and 7-9PM. Funeral Mass at Resurrection Parish, 651 Millbrook Ave., Randolph 973-895-4224 Saturday September 12,2009 at 10AM. James will be laid to rest at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Randolph.
