Obituary of John G O'Leary
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John G. O’Leary, Jr., a longtime resident of Succasunna, peacefully passed away with his wife by his side on March 24, 2020.
Affectionately known to everyone as Jack, he was born in Dover, on January 22, 1949. After graduating from Dover High School in 1967, Jack attended the University of Tennessee where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1972. He worked for various firms in the area and finally with Dewberry Consulting Engineers as a Project Manager where he made many friendships and retired from in 2015.
As a youngster, Jack was an avid hunter & fisherman, involved in the Boy Scouts of America and the Explorer program, he played both baseball and basketball. His lifelong love for both the Yankees and Giants was unparalleled.
As he got older, Jack joined his brother-in laws on a bowling team. He also enjoyed playing golf with his family, good friend Bob Sellitto, along with many others. However, his most cherished times were when he was in the company of his brother-in law Sam, who he fondly referred to as his “brother from another mother”.
It was sometime in 1960, when Jack met his new neighbors, the Tromba family. He instantly became best friends with the boys, but nobody would ever have imagined that when he met their sister Angela that she would become the love of his life. Eventually, they were married on August 24th, 1974. In 1978, they welcomed their daughter Jaime into the world, and he became her devoted father.
Walking his best furry friend, Pistachio, was one of his daily highlights after retirement and enabled many neighborhood friendships. He was a beloved member of the neighborhood and enjoyed his community. One of the things he was very proud of was working the voting polls during the elections.
Family and friends were constantly present in Jack’s younger years and as he grew older, these relationships became such an important part of his life. He always looked forward to attending family functions and would go out of his way to make sure that he spent time with everyone. Over the years, his love of family was quite evident with the many trips and activities that were taken with his nieces and nephews.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Angela (nee Tromba), and cherished daughter Jaime. Devoted son of Phyllis (Gonzalez) and oldest brother of Denise Poslusny (Chet), Kevin (Lisa), and Kelly Watson (Rick). Loving uncle to Meghan (Ken), Michael, Jessica, KerryAnn, Mackenzie, Nicholas, Dana (Joey), Danielle, Nicholas (Jamie) and great uncle to Josh, Emma, Ashlynn, Matteo, Ava, Gavin, and goddaughter, Samantha. He was proxy grandfather to Austin, Mateo, Anisa, Emily, & Ian. He is predeceased by his father John (Jack) G. O’Leary, Sr., his father and mother-in law Lucy & Joseph Tromba and brother-in law William (Bill) Tromba. Jack is also survived by his brother-in laws Sam Tromba (Betty) and Joe Tromba (Patty) as well as many loving cousins and countless friends.
