Sue was the consumate care-taker. I know she took care of many of her family members, but she also took care of one of mine, my aunt Angela Baker.
Angela and her husband Ralph befriended Sue when they owned a Western Auto store in New Jersey and Sue was a kid at loose ends.
Sue never forgot, and she was always there for my aunt and visited Angela in Illinois many times. When my aunt moved from independent living to assisted, Sue was there with me helping her move -- that's how I got to know her. And throughout the rest of Angela's life in Arlington Heights IL, Sue was there. Sue would drive from New Jersey to Illinois to take Angela to a doctor's appointment! She was the one Angela counted on, and even filled the job of Angela's Power of Attorney. Sue and I met many times in Arlington Heights visiting Angela, and sometimes my son came along; the four of us made for a good time.
As Angela aged with Parkinson's and dementia, Sue kept driving from New Jersey, even after Angela could no longer remember who she was. When Angela passed, Sue had already made all the arrangements, including a wake and viewing at the funeral home in Arlington Heights -- it was attended only by Sue, me, and the dietician from the nursing home. At 94, Angela had outlived all her friends but Sue. Sue also arranged for Angela's body to be transported back to New Jersey, to be buried next to her husband and her parents. She and I drove there after the Arlington wake in Sue's beloved Cadillac, a luxury trip.
Sue had arranged for a service at the cemetary, with a pastor and a small tent set up next to the grave, where the two of us listened to the pastor's eulogy. Sue then did all the grunt work of being executor...
Sue was amazing, and inspirational. I never saw her again, but we exchanged Christmas notes every year until 2024, when my letter to her came back with addressee unknown.
