Dear Mary and Christopher, I really don't know what to say. I have great memories of you guys coming to the nahant and visiting and eating and drinking. I love you cousin and I'm very sorry that David is gone. I saw the wonderful pictures of him with the music and all his friends and family .When I see the camera around his neck and a hat, that is definitely my memory of David. I can't believe he's gone and I hate the fact that our families don't talk anymore because we did have lots of fun together. I'll pray for you and Christopher. I love you both Please tell all on the girls that I love them too . I am in Salem ma now ,home of the witches .God Bless . Love to all of you . Janet

I'm John Torrey, one of the members of Bergan High School's first graduating class, 1966. It was also THE smallest. I was in classes with Dave, because I always tested smart, but received poor grades because of my immaturity.
Dave was a fun guy to be around. One of my best memories of high school was when Rick Grawey, Dave, Myself, Dave Oakes, and assorted others would walk up to his house near Knoxville and play basketball. We had many raucous shootouts.
Dave always had a great smile, was interested, and could find humor, in the antics of the miscreants in our class. A sentiment, not really shared by others.
One thing I really liked about Dave was that he went his own way. He followed what he had a real interest in, not what his parents wanted for him.
I ran into him at the Peoria airport, around Christmas of '66. I had been on leave from the Army, Dave was going back to school in St. Louis. We recognized each other at the same time. I was in my dress greens. He said,
"God, John, what happened to you?!"
I had gained about 20 lbs from my ultra-skinny physique at Bergan.
My super insightful reply was," The Army."
He laughed and we chatted a little bit, catching up.
A few years later, he and Rick Grawey showed up at my wife, Diane and I's apartment, behind Agatucci's.
The explanation was that he and Rick Grawey had participated in some anti-war demonstrations and were hiding out from the FBI, Secret Service, or "the government". I took great pride then and still do that when things were getting a little dicey, they felt they could come to their roughneck friend, John, to hide out for a little while.
I only saw Dave a few more times, but there was always the bright smile, instant, earnest engagement, and very friendly, humorous demeanor.
Dave was a wonderful person. I am very fortunate to be able to call him, Friend.
Thank you, Dave, God Bless.
John Torrey, Bergan '66

Dave, you always seemed to have a knack of leaving a person in a better state after interacting with you. You shared a smile, chuckle, story, or a good thought in such an easy manner. Thank you for providing all of us a beautiful example of a life well lived.

Always a smile, a joke, deep appreciation for everything in life, love and admiration for Mary, always talking about Christopher, lessons about hitchhikers, trips with his Mazda Miata, Leica memories, lessons about „look after your teeth“, showing so much kindness and so many fond memories of David on so many levels.
You leave a big gap.
Love

Mike met Dave as the older brother of Dick Schlink who was a good high school friend. I met Dave soon after Mike and I started dating in 1973. Dave was always upbeat, positive and thorough. His laugh was infectious and a joy to hear. In 1978 Mike and I traveled to Germany and spent time with Dave who was living there at the time. Mike and Dave set up an American Indian Art exhibit in Frankfort. It was such an amazing experience! The next year Mike, Dave and I drove from the East Coast to Colorado looking for antique art glass and Leica cameras along the way. It was a trip we'll never forget! In 1981 we traveled to California for Dave and Mary's wedding. We couldn't have been happier for them and it was a wonderful day to celebrate with good friends. We have several of Dave's photographs hanging in our home. He had an amazing eye through the lens of his Leica. Dave was a good friend and we are thankful for all the good times we had together. He will be missed by all who knew him but never forgotten.
In love and friendship,
Mike and Debbie Romanus

In 1962 Dave and I finished our eight years together at St. Cecilia grade school in Peoria, IL. He was the smartest and nicest guy in our class. I visited him in the 2500 block of Sheridan Rd. and he came over to our house on Columbia Terrace many times. We then went to different high schools and I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him after grade school graduation, but he occasionally dropped by the courthouse to see my cohort, Judge Rick Grawey, a friend from high school. Rick would bring me up to date on Dave. He was simply an unforgettable fun guy. My sympathies to brother Dick, sister Anne and the rest of the family.

Dear Mary, Christopher, Anne and Rich,
Last night I wrote in my gratitude journal: “I’m grateful for having known Dave Schlink.”
Our parents, Mary Lou & Val and Patty & John Scherer were best friends. Dave was the first born of the six of us – two years older than me. In many ways, I think of him as my older brother. And Anne my older sister. Our families have kept in contact all these years.
Dave braved the world ahead of us! There are SO many memories: Mary and Dave’s wedding, Christopher’s birth and baptism (we are his godparents), all the photography/camera advice and best of all: Dave’s broad, sparkling, welcoming smile and laughter. One offbeat memory specifically sticks in my mind. While my memory is hazy on the facts, I vividly recall my mother getting off the phone and saying: “Oh, poor Mary Lou and Val…Dave and Rick Grawey went to San Francisco.” (They had hitch-hiked their way to San Francisco sometime during the 1967-68 “Summer of Soul.”)
Both of our parents were strict. And in their minds, San Francisco -- and its infamous hippie movement -- were NOT consistent with the behavior that they wished to instill in their ‘children.’ California was a place for crazy people! I find it ironic that not too much later, Mary Lou and Val moved to San Mateo, CA (25 miles south of San Francisco.) Mary Lou introduced me to Foster City, where Phil, John and I have resided for the last thirty years. We pass Mary Lou and Val’s house on Barneson on our way to/from our parish regularly.
I’m grateful to Dave for having braved the pioneering path to California for me! But I am even more grateful for having known this kind, generous, creative friend.
Rest in peace, Dave. I know Mary Lou and Val, Patty and John and Nicholas are greeting you in heaven. We miss you but will never forget you.
Love,
Susan, Phil and John Calandra
(And all of the extended Scherer Family)
Foster City, CA

Our memories of David while you were with us in Basel are the same as yours: intelligent but soft-spoken till something funny occurred. Then his warm laughter would fill the space around him as little crinkles appeared at the corners of his eyes, so full of Life and living it! We hope Christopher will follow in the steps his Dad left behind. We trust the strength of family & friends near and far will carry you through the coming days, without David there at your side, knowing that he is in fact all around you, for always.

David was a wonderful Man. Full of Sweetness and Charm. Always had a huge smile on his face.
You could be only be happy when around David.
I loved seeing David at our class reunions.
Prone to saying outrageous things, After one class reunion, David said I and brother John should be running the Government. Among our classmates, I am sure that raised a few eyebrows. But that was David.
I remember, in high school, going to his house after high school classes, and shooting baskets. We all made fun of one another. Nothing mean, just silly.
We all know he is in Heaven, I'm sure God gave David his body back. I will be glad to meet up with him again.

Dave was a beloved cousin known for his infectious laughter, sense of humor, and his ability for commentary. He often acted as a vaudeville straight man with his dad, Val, and my father, bringing humor to our family dynamic during the late 60s in Peoria. Dave and his family made everything fun and exciting like a Normal Lear sitcom. Whether visiting Ralph & Mary Margaret's "toy house " or their drug store, to talking about current events with his many younger cousins. He had a positive outlook on life and could deliver a punchline, making us all laugh.
Dave's adventurous spirit was admirable - he lived in Europe, hitchhiked across the US, and pursued his passions for photography and cars. When he visited Peoria, he entertained us with stories of his travels and the adventures he had along the way. He had a special bond with his Uncle Dave, my dad, and often teased and bantered with him to comic relief.
Cousin Dave, we will miss you dearly. Thank you for your warmth, love, and spirit. Rest in peace.

In the days immediately after 9/11, as we all went around stunned and out of sorts, I remember running into David in his cul-de-sac when I went out for a walk. We chatted for a bit about the shock of it all, and when we paused for a second, I said to David, "David, look up. THAT is something we'll never see again in our lifetimes". We both turned our heads to the brilliant, empty blue sky above us, which as our neighborhood knows is always filled with airplanes and jet trails, and we just stood in awe of the silence and absence of anything in the airspace for a few minutes. This is how I will always remember David...awed by what life throws at us, and willing to see the good in whatever that is.
