Obituary of Mary Johanna LoPonte
Mary Johanna LoPonte, 81, of Netcong, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the VNA Hospice, Dover. Johanna was born in Brooklyn to the late Dr. Joseph J. and Mrs. Mary LoPonte.
Johanna graduated from Fordham University in 1962 with a B.S. in Education and went on to earn a M.S. in Education in 1967 at Brooklyn College. Johanna’s career in elementary education included several years in the New York Public School system, and after moving to New Jersey, she worked with the special education team in the Roxbury School district until she retired.
A long term resident of Mount Arlington, Johanna was committed to protecting quality of life for all of its citizens and served on Town Council, the Land Use Board and was elected Mayor in 1998. She was a strong advocate for a new library, focused on budget adherence, water quality and waste water management, protecting residents’ interests concerning traffic and development, and beautification of Mount Arlington including the Memorial Park, Roller Rink and Borough Hall planting.
She is survived by three siblings Peter J. LoPonte and spouse Crystal of Las Vegas, NV, Christine LoPonte Peleckis and spouse Joe of Millville, DE, and Joseph J. LoPonte and spouse Tina of Oradell; nieces Tatjana, Nicole, Elizabeth, Mary and nephew Joseph; great-nieces and a great-nephew as well as several cousins and friends. She is predeceased by her sister Marie A. LoPonte, MD in 2002.
Memorial Visitation will be held on Tuesday May 16th from 10AM to 11AM at Our Lady of The Lake Roman Catholic Church,8 Windemere Ave, Mt Arlington, NJ. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11am. Interment will be Private
