Obituary of Jean E Goldsworthy
Jean Goldsworthy was born in Dover, New Jersey on May 28, 1929. She spent her ninety-four years lifting her eyes to the hill overlooking Hurd Park, with the pavilion her grandfather helped build. She died around four in the morning on June 5, 2023 in the hospital she fought tirelessly to save in the 1990's and ultimately kept in Dover, with that same hill looking down at her through her fourth floor hospital window. For over forty years she worked as a switchboard operator, clerk typist, and eventually a purchasing agent at L. E. Carpenter & Company in Wharton, which was the birthplace of her husband, James of over forty-three years.
Amid the loss of her husband, her son Robert, her brother Herb, and her elder sister Doris, she faced and endured life's tribulations with grace and courage. The sixty plus years of membership at Grace United Methodist Church provided Jean with a sustaining wellspring of faith community and friendships. The blessed caregivers of her latter years of life helped to instill a sense of peace and wellbeing, allowing her to reflect on a lifetime of hard work, zealous dedication to service, laughter, tears, and love.
Jean is survived by her first-born son James, her daughter-in-law Judith, her granddaughter Ariana, her younger sister Gail Thompson, her younger brother Steve Mitchell and sister-in-law Darla and many nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and a great-grand nephew. The breadth and depth of her love of family, friends, church, and community was unceasing and everflowing. The power and sustenance of that love lives on.
A memorial service will take place at Grace United Methodist Church (98 North Sussex Street) in Dover at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 8.
