Obituary of Henry Garie
Henry “Hank” Garie, 97, lifelong resident of Dover, NJ passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024. Hank had been a resident at Sunrise of Randolph Assisted Senior Living facility in Randolph, NJ for several years. He leaves behind three children – Henry L and Michele of Land O Lakes FL, Bradley and Mary Ellen of Dover, NJ and Jodi and Victoria of The Villages FL, along with 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Hank was born on December 10, 1926 to Louis and Elizabeth Garie in Mt. Hope, NJ who had immigrated from Hungary in the early 1900’s where they raised a family of 9 children. Hank attended Wharton High School and earned a technical certification at Picatinny Arsenal as a Tool and Die Maker after serving a two-year apprenticeship to become a toolmaker, serving the military including machining parts for research satellites. He also worked at Reaction Motors in Rockaway Township, building engine parts for early rocket motor testing and high-speed jet aircraft. Later, he worked as a Model Maker at Allied Signal in Morris Plains where he retired in 1989.
Hank met the love of his life, Betty, while they were both teenagers and they celebrated 50+ years of marriage. They built a house on Mechanic St, just north on Dover, where they lived for their entire lives and raised their family. Hank was a loving and devoted husband and father who worked hard to ensure each child received a college education. He was an avid fisherman who could often be found at Mt. Hope Pond or the Rockaway River with his sons during trout season; or attending one of the many sports activities the family participated in. He also loved throwing horse shoes at family picnics where relatives and friends would gather for spirited competitions (and refreshments!). Throughout their lives together Hank and Betty were members of Saint John’s Episcopal Church in Dover where they participated weekly and contributed in many ways, including serving as bakers of pasties for the community.
