Obituary of Rev. Dr. Carter A Smith
The Rev. Doctor Carter A. Smith passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 13 2024. He was 89 years old. Carter was born on May 13, 1934 to Lillian Carter Smith and George L. Smith. He was pre-deceased by his brother Wayne C. Smith.
Carter enlisted in the Air Force as a Personnel Specialist. His time was spent at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas 1956-1959.
Carters ministry began with the Salvation Army Officers Training School in New York City and he received his certificate in 1953. That training would influence him throughout his ministry. He received his BA in philosophy and religion from Bloomfield College in 1966, his Master of Divinity Cum Laude from Drew School of Theology in 1970 and his Doctor of Ministry from Drew School of Theology 1979.
During the course of his ministry he served Hampton UMC 1963-1969,
St. James 1969-1974, Suffern 1974-1979, Bethany UMC 1979-1983, Lake Hopatcong 1983-1990, Dover 1990-1995, Whitehouse UMC 1995-1999, Rockaway Valley 2010-2015 and other short terms in retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda Smith, by his son Drew Smith, and his friend Rich Martins, his daughters Robin Montarsi and Amy Janowsky and her husband Matt, and "God" son Michael Kilano and wife Jessica. He is also survived by his grand children Gianna, Jackson, Sasha, Natalie, Michael, Avery, Camden and Amelia.
