Fred T. Wolk, of Lake Shawnee, Wharton, NJ, passed away on January 2, 2010.
He is survived by his sister Anne F. Newill of Midlothian, VA; his sister-in-law Eleanor Townley, of Lake Shawnee, NJ, his three nieces Barbara McShane of Whippany, NJ, Carol Newill of Baltimore, MD, and Laurel Newill of Midlothian, VA; his nephew Walter Townley of Lake Shawnee, NJ; his two great nieces Erin McShane of Whippany, NJ and Lisa Newill-Smith of Midlothian, VA; and his two great nephews David Newill-Smith of Midlothian, VA and Paul Newill-Schamp of Baltimore, MD.
Fred was born February 23, 1920, in Arlington (now Kearny), NJ to John and Mary Wolk, and grew up with his brother Joseph and sister Anne in Arlington. He graduated from Kearny High School in 1938. Fred attended the College of Business Administration at Syracuse University, majoring in Transportation. He received his Bachelors degree from Syracuse in 1947, and went on to receive his Masters in Business Administration from New York University. Fred was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Social Fraternity, Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity, and Alpha Kappa Psi Commerce Fraternity.
Fred worked for many years in NYC, and retired from the American Savings Bank (formerly Franklin Savings Bank) as Deputy Auditor.
In 1960 Fred married Edith Townley at the Hurdtown United Methodist Church in Jefferson, NJ. They were married for 48 years, living briefly in East Orange, NJ, and then residing in Lake Shawnee, NJ. Edith passed away in June of 2008.
Fred belonged to the Hurdtown United Methodist Church for over 45 years. Both he and Edith were dedicated members and volunteers of the church. Fred served as auditor for the church, was a former member of the Church Board of Trustees, and sang in the church choir. He also volunteered his skills as an auditor for other non-profit organizations, and was a volunteer preparer of tax returns for the AARP for more than 20 years.
Fred was a talented athlete, playing baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and tennis. He especially excelled in and enjoyed skiing and ice skating, winning medals and trophies in both of those sports in his youth.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at the Hurdtown United Methodist Church at 823 Route 15 South, Lake Hopatcong, NJ. Interment services will be private.
