Obituary of Jorge Luis Garcia

Jorge Luis Garcia, 82, of Miami Beach, Florida and formerly of New Jersey, passed peacefully into heaven on October 30, 2019. Jorge was a proud Cuban and a man of faith.

On November 25, 1936, Jorge was born in Cardenas, Cuba to Saturnino and Amelia Garcia. In 1962 he married the love of his life, Perla (Menendez), and they began their 57-year love story.

Jorge graduated from the University of Havana, where he pursued his love of basketball. Jorge was a member of the Cuban National Olympic Team, which later in life put him in the Cuban Basketball Hall of Fame in Miami, Florida. After marrying Perla and becoming the father to George Luis, he took his wife and son and left his beloved homeland of Cuba in 1970 to start a new life of freedom. After much sacrifice, the Garcia's were free of communism and entered into the United States. Jorge settled his family in Essex County, New Jersey. After working odds jobs while becoming a United States citizen, of which he was immensely proud, he worked as a tax accountant for Schering-Plough Corporation for over 25 years. Jorge and Perla ended their working life as owner-operators of Perla's Confectionary in Newark, New Jersey.

The highlight of Jorge's life and his pride and joy, was always his family- wife Perla, son George, daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandchildren Alexa and George III. He was our cheerleader, the best husband, father, father-in-law, best "grandpa", best friend and most respected role model there ever was. He was a big fan of the New York Yankees and the Miami Dolphins. He loved his daily Cuban coffee, Miami Beach and connecting and sharing stories with everyone he came in contact with.

He was predeceased by his parents Saturnino and Amelia, brother Raul (Macusa), and baby daughter Annette. He leaves behind his wife Perla, son George (Lisa), grandchildren Alexa and George III, brother Carlos (Elena), sister Matti and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation Tuesday, Novmber 5, 2019, 4:00-8:00PM at Tuttle Funeral Home, Randolph. Funeral Mass Wednesday, November 6, 2019, 10:00AM at Immaculate Conception Church, Montclair. Interment to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
