My condolences to the Litus Family
I am Marshall Robert, one of Jake's former employers and remember not that long ago giving him a glowing letter of recommendation to work at the NJDEP. Glad he got the job but it is painful to hear of his passing.
I fondly remember our discussions about his work in the National Park Service and him mapping resources in caves, about Bit Coins and Bears Ears, Data Warehouses and GIS software, cars that would not start and how much his family meant to him.
He would call now and again to ask if he could swing by the office to pick up his paycheck early so he could go on another camping excursion with his friends and family.
He always did what I asked of him and then some. This world is a bit less vibrant today. I will miss him.

Today I learned that an old high school classmate of mine, Jake Litus, passed away on Monday. I've been struggling all day with how best to honor him. We weren't particularly close, we're not even friends on social media, and I regret both of these facts. But we were friendly, and I still feel impacted by his passing. I debated whether to go to the viewing, to send something, to post something. Finally, as I was journaling before bed and reflecting on all these thoughts, I settled on simply sharing the story of how he changed my life.
At my high school all seniors have the option of going on this retreat each month. There was a lot of secrecy involved so as not to spoil it for those who had not attended yet, but I think by now I no longer have any friends on here I could spoil it for. On one night of this retreat, each student receives unexpected letters from family, friends, and classmates who had already attended the retreat. These letters are meant to show the students how much they have impacted the lives of others and how much they are loved. Of course, the letters from your parents are always dependable for a good cry, but it was the letter I got from Jake that really encapsulated the entire experience of Kairos for me.
My only real interaction with Jake had been sitting next to him in AP Psych, a fact which he mentioned in the letter and thanked me for helping him get through that class (sometimes unbeknownst to me, which he apologized for). We would talk a bit before and after class but that was about it. He was the last person I expected a letter from. But in the letter he laid out how highly he thought of me. How he thought I was smart and caring and very down to earth. He then recounted how one day he had taken a physics test just prior to psych and was sure he had failed it. He was super bummed out about it when apparently I came in and simply said, "it's a beautiful day today, isn't it?" Jake then claimed how this had completely changed his day and how he realized the importance of being grateful for little things like this we often take for granted even in the face of something upsetting.
To this day, that letter is still the one I most vividly remember and consider to be the most meaningful I received. It was certainly one of the longest. To hear he passed was a total shock. Jake taught me the lesson that you never know how you impact other people in your life, even in chance encounters. It was a lesson I then tried to take into every day of my life, and even into my work as a therapist. Appreciating everything around me and always being kind.
I wish we had been able to become closer after that retreat like he had hoped in that letter. It's something I'll always regret. But I have faith in God's plan and in the meaning of the encounters we did have. Thank you Jake for the impact you had in my life, and the impact you've had in every life I've touched since. It was a blessing to know you. Rest easy brother, and live the Fourth.

I always loved it when there was a knock on the door and Jake was on the other side. He always took the time to talk, and of course he immediately charmed all of the dogs we’ve had through the years. His mischief and sweet smile will be missed immeasurably. Words can’t express how saddened and sorry we are for your immense loss.

who we are:
Tuttle Funeral home was designed as a funeral home by funeral home architects and designers. Unllike many funeral homes that were originally old homes and then were converted into funeral homes.
Though it was designed as a funeral home, it still provides the warm comforting feeling of a home, but with more space and an open feeling.
